Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my BMI?
Enter your height and weight in metric (cm/kg) or imperial (in/lb) units and click “Calculate BMI”. The tool shows your BMI number and which weight category it falls into.
What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple measure that uses your height and weight to estimate whether you are in a healthy weight range. BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)².
What is a healthy BMI?
A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered normal or healthy for most adults. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese.
Is BMI calculated the same for men and women?
Yes, the BMI formula is the same for adult men and women. It does not adjust for sex, which is one reason it is a general guide rather than a precise health measure.
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
BMI is a useful general guide but does not account for muscle mass, age or body composition, so athletes and some others may get misleading results. Treat it as a starting point, not a diagnosis.
Is this BMI calculator free and private?
Yes. It is free and all calculations happen in your browser, nothing is stored or uploaded.
